In 2016, Kelly and Mike moved to her mother’s hometown, Liberal, Kansas where she spent many summers as a kid. Mike worked for the Brenneman’s at the funeral home and Kelly returned to her love of teaching working at the Colvin Adult Learning Center where she taught the adult GED program. In 2017, Kelly and Mike purchased the funeral home and she went to work full time helping Mike and her Dad run the family business.
Birth, marriage, and death registers generally followed the same style within a given community or region. Typically, registers were maintained by the rabbi in those communities that could afford one. In the absence of a resident rabbi, a Jewish parochial school teacher or a community leader was responsible for keeping the register. Kelly was a lifelong Colorado Avalanche and Denver Broncos fan.

He is survived by wife Patsy, twin sons Brent and Bert, sons Greg and Brian, daughter Alicia, eight grandchildren, two sisters and a brother. Stuhr graduated from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science and joined his family’s business in 1980, representing the fifth generation of the firm. Bubela was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and a retired justice of the peace.

He belonged to the Masons of Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM (a 70-year member who held the position of Worshipful Master in 1960). The same is true of Cohn, Cohen, and Kahn; Schnaddicher and Schnaittacher, and Buttenwieser and Buddewiser are used interchangeably. In the second half of the 19th century, the desire for assimilation led some German Jews to change their given names from biblical or other, typically Jewish names to names they regarded as more elegant alternatives. Sometimes the old and new names alliterated, but often they did not. While in high school and college, she taught an afterschool program at a daycare where her love of children and teaching was first realized. After becoming a nurse, Kelly worked for several years as an RN, first in La Junta, Colorado, and then in the Denver Metro area.
She had a special love for all things Disney – from the parks to her amazing collection of Disney dresses. From an early age, Kelly was a spectacular cook and baker, always trying new recipes for her family. Recently she had built a ceramics studio in her new home and had proudly returned to a hobby she avidly pursued as a teenager.
Although most original Jewish civil records from the 19th century appear lost, microfilmed copies of many of them survived in the Leipzig and Gatermann films. Baden-Wuerttemberg and some Bavarian records are accessible online. Most can be found in the respective state and district archives.
Perhaps Emperor Joseph II should be thanked for some of the growth of the Jewish population, and the economic and academic success of 19th-century European Jewry. In contrast to records in journal style, many jurisdictions preferred or prescribed that civil records be kept in ledger style. Figure 3, shown on the next page, is an example of a ledger record. Retired funeral director, brother of Jerry Jagers and uncle of Tim Jagers, all of Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, Ohio, died September 1, 2022, at age 92. Jagers attended Ohio University and Cincinnati College of Embalming, and he served at Jagers and Sons for more than 75 years.
